Driftwood & Lamp for artistic creations driftwood lamp

Whenever I have time to walk the beach, I always find pieces of unique driftwood that I love. This results in a stock pile of random driftwood pieces for my stash. Because of this I tend to always have a great selection to pick from when creating a DIY project.

When you find a old or broken lamp that needs a new look, clean it up. As well as, remove any pieces that may be broken on the lamp. If you have to use a hammer always wear some protective eye wear to prevent injury. It also helps to check and make sure the lamp actually works before you get to far into your project.

Clean & repair for proper refurbishing

Once all the broken pieces and other decorative items that need to come off are removed, it will need some sanding. A light sanding is always a good thing to do on the surface to give the surface some tooth. If your surface is smooth already, use a low grit sandpaper so you don’t leave big grooves in your surface. 220 grit is a good starting point, just watch for any scratches you might accidently leave on it. So, one of the best workable fillers I have found on the market to use is Dixie Bell’s Mud filler. ( https://dixiebellepaint.com/shop-dbp/dixie-mud/ ) I used the white variety on the base of this lamp spread with a plastic spatula. Once dry it was lightly sanded again with 220 grit sandpaper over the top portion.

Ready for painting the whole lamp? I used another Dixie Bell product, their basic silver metallic paint on the entire piece. This included the pipe that feeds the cord through to the top. It was then coated with some of their Gator hide finish coat for a durable protection. Let it dry over night. The next day your ready to find just the right wood and rocks that will compliment your creation.

Try them on the base and even tie them in place to build up what your vision might be. Get your rocks ready if that is in your plan for your piece as well. I tried loads of different glue at this stage, with most of them a big fail! What did work is my electric plug in glue gun. You need to work fast though, because it will get solid on you fast. As a result, you can build a beauty pretty quickly.
